Experience

Lloyd has tried over one hundred felony cases. He has handled thousands of cases, from common misdemeanors to the most complicated and serious felonies. He also has significant experience with the juvenile courts and knows how important it is to help kids who have gotten on the wrong track in order to keep them from becoming adult clients.  The State Bar of California certified him as a specialist in criminal law in 2002.  From 2000 to 2004 he was in private practice in the Bay Area, gaining valuable perspective as to the varied approaches other counties use to address several issues affecting the justice system that are different from how they have been traditionally handled in the Los Angeles Superior Court. Additionally, from his experience as a private lawyer, Lloyd also understands the difficulties facing defense lawyers who must make appearances in multiple locations.

Lloyd has had the chance to observe a number of the best jurists to wear a robe in Los Angeles County, as well as a few of the worst. He has had the opportunity to learn in the courtroom from some of most dedicated and upright lawyers – both prosecutors and defense attorneys.  He knows that justice starts with treating everyone with civility and respect, whether a person is a doctor or a dockworker, whether the person is wearing a uniform and a badge, or wearing the clothes he’s been sleeping in on the street.

From 2016-2018, Lloyd was Deputy-in-charge of the Public Defender’s Public Interest Integrity Assurance section. In that position he oversaw the Office’ litigation addressed at resentencing individuals who were unfairly sentenced to life sentences under the Three Strikes Law. He also was responsible for archiving information relating to Law Enforcement Misconduct in Los Angeles County and disseminating that information to Deputy Public Defenders and advising them as to the use of such information in trial.
